MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF HARWICH TOWN COUNCIL
HELD ON
7th JANUARY 2009 at 7.15pm
at the 1912 CENTRE, COW LANE, HARWICH
Present: The Mayor, Councillor D Rutson, in the Chair
The Deputy Mayor, Councillor J Brown
Councillors: B Brown, R Callender, L Double, G Calver,
M Gardner, A Colbourne, A Morrison, S Henderson, J Wares, S
Tyrer and P Burke
The Clerk to the Council, Mrs E Novorol
Also present: 1 member of the press and 11 members of the public.
Mr C Strachan gave a statement regarding hospital services at Harwich. He
asked if the new PCT has access to the results of studies carried out in the 1990s
and raised concerns regarding facilities that are available at the Fryatt Hospital
but are not presently in use.
Dr Zollinger-Read gave an update regarding the hospital and explained which
services could or could not be offered in Harwich. Further questions from
members of the public were answered by Dr Zollinger-Read who agreed to send
further information, as it becomes available, to Harwich Town Council and to
those present at this meeting.

130/08 DECLARATIONS OF MEMBERS’ INTERESTS

131/08 THE FRYATT HOSPITAL
Councillors asked for further information regarding services at The
Fryatt Hospital. Dr Zollinger-Read explained how the PCT buys in
services via tenders which can be from both the NHS and the private
sector. A discussion followed regarding a drop-in centre for men’s
health problems, the maternity unit and use of the hospital’s gym by
those with disabilities. Members were advised that GP’s will be
moving to the hospital in early February.
RESOLVED: to write to Dr Zollinger-Read, assuring him of the full

support of Harwich Town Council for the provision of a drop-in centre
for men’s health problems at Harwich Hospital.
132/08 DATE OF THE NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of Harwich Town Council will be held on 28th
January, 2009 at the 1912 Centre, Cow Lane, Harwich at 7.00pm or at
the rise of the Planning Committee, whichever is the later.
The Chairman closed the meeting at 8.00pm
