Users of Brightlingsea and Harwich Sports Centres will be contacted soon by Tendring District Council’s (TDC) leisure team as part of transitional arrangements.

TDC’s agreements with Sigma Trust, the sites’ owner, to run the sports facilities ended last month, but the council is working to help centre users transition to booking directly with the Trust.

Existing bookings made through TDC are being honoured, and block bookers and hirers will be communicated to soon to transfer their regular sessions to a new Sigma Trust agreement. TDC will be exploring further opportunities for those with bookings that cannot be accommodated.

Meanwhile those who do racquet sports at the sites are being asked to come forward to gauge interest in forming a local club.

While casual use of the racquet courts will not continue, scheduled group bookings by affiliated clubs could be accommodated. TDC is looking to support the formation of local clubs under national sport governing body arrangements by bringing interested people together.

Those keen to get involved should email either hsc@tendringdc.gov.uk (Harwich) or bsc@tendringdc.gov.uk (Brightlingsea) by 20 February to register their interest.

Discussions are ongoing about future gym operations at Brightlingsea.

Alex Porter, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said the authority was working to support centre users going forward

“As agreed at our Cabinet meeting in December we are committed to providing support for up to three months to ensure sports centre users in Brightlingsea and Harwich have time to make alternative arrangements – including directly booking with the schools,” Cllr Porter said.

“Part of this process will see us communicating to regular customers, and we ask them to wait for our communication – while racquet sports players we’d ask to come forward on the details provided.”

A Sigma Trust spokesperson added: “We are committed to making our facilities available for the community to use in an organised and structured way, and are working closely with TDC to ensure a smooth transition occurs.”
