Harwich Town Council launches initiative to assist residents living with dementia

Harwich Town Council has recently undergone dementia awareness training so that the council can assist in supporting local residents who live with dementia and increase dementia awareness within the overall community.

As part of this, Harwich Town Council sought ways in which the council could offer local support and was advised of how therapeutic ‘music and memory’ sessions are for both those living with dementia and also their families and carers.

As a result, the council has taken the decision to establish monthly ‘music and memory’ sessions within the town and to earmark funding to ensure they can run for the next three years.

Nicki Cailes of Age Concern Colchester & North East Essex says,

“As the leaders of the Tendring Dementia Action Alliance, Age Concern Colchester & NE Essex are delighted to support the Dementia Music afternoons at the Park Pavilion and to work with Harwich Town Council who have been so proactive in their efforts to become Dementia Friendly.”

The monthly sessions will take place at the Park Pavilion and can accommodate up to 50 people each month with the first event being held on Wednesday 16th February.

Dale Cheesman of the Harwich Community Association says,

“The Community association has great pleasure in being part of the Dementia music therapy classes, a fantastic initiative from Harwich Town Council in funding these classes for three years. This will be a great asset for the town and very much needed.”

The overall cost in providing the monthly sessions for the next three years is £3,000 and this expenditure has been unanimously approved by Harwich Town Council. The sessions will be delivered by Clare Leach and will also be attended by a member of Age Concern’s team who will be available to offer advice and additional support.

Clare Leach of Harwich Sing Tendring Voices, who will be delivering the sessions, says,

“I can say with my experience of running Harwich Sing Tendring Voices, that music and singing is wonderful for everyone’s general happiness and bringing people together but seeing firsthand how magical music is to those with dementia and their loved ones is nothing short of incredible.”

Harwich Town Council is extremely pleased to have achieved its accreditation as a ‘Dementia Friendly’ organisation and hopes that many other organisations do the same in order to increase local awareness and support.

Mayor of Harwich, Cllr Ivan Henderson, says

“Harwich Town Council is pleased to have achieved ‘Dementia Friendly’ status and to be able to provide practical support within the local community. I’m sure the music and memory sessions will provide a regular, positive experience for all those present and we are delighted to be able to assist in this way.”
